At Elmira College, the Black Student Union has been busy. Throughout this term, the group has helped to organize a myriad of events, including a live music performance and multiple panels examining African-American history. The club’s impact on the student community is undeniable, and the changes they’re working to make aren’t going unnoticed. Callisophia sat down with member Jazmine Knox ‘26, to discuss the group’s future plans and impact on the campus community.
CALLISOPHIA: Clubs are an incredibly important part of the Elmira College community.
Without them, it would be difficult for student culture to thrive. How has the Black Student
Union impacted your time at EC?
JAZMINE: Without clubs, the campus would be a much less lively place. BSU aims to bring
together Black students and those who support them, in order to celebrate Black culture, history, and diversity. We also want to be able to provide a platform for students who usually would not have the opportunity to have a voice. The Black Student Union is playing a major role in my college experience by allowing me to meet other students who have similar interests and values, that also look just like me.
C: Throughout the year, clubs are tasked with organizing a number of events and programs. It goes without saying that this is an excellent way to encourage student participation. What are some of the projects that the BSU has been working on recently?
J: As of right now, we’re working on a few projects. So far, though, we’ve done a fashion
inspiration photoshoot for Black students of all backgrounds here at the school. That was in early February. Additionally, we have been very active in the community and in hosting panels on a plethora of topics dealing with the success of entrepreneurs in the African-American community. In the future, we’re interested in a trip to the Jones Museum. We want to create an outreach program for our members within the Elmira community, connecting like-minded individuals and providing mentorship for youth.
C: In addition to being essential for the campus community, clubs are also highly rewarding to participate in. Have you found that to be true throughout your time in the BSU? What part of it is the most exciting?
J: Yes, I have found the Black Student Union to be highly rewarding to participate in. It’s one of the many clubs on campus that have created a better college experience for myself. The most exciting thing I have done so far was in February, when we went to Parley Coburn Elementary School to speak about Black History topics. The third graders were very engaged and had lots of questions. I had the opportunity to talk about Little Rock Nine. I want to do it again sometime, there are so many topics about Black History that are important to learn.
C: Of course, clubs are supposed to be just as enjoyable as they are necessary. Therefore, I
have to ask what your favorite part about being in the BSU is. What do you enjoy the most
about the experience?
J: I enjoy connecting with and supporting all the members. The BSU is a space where I can truly be myself. I’ve found others who get and understand me on a level that certain students could not even fathom.
